- W1660772807 abstract "The US Pacific Northwest (PNW) is home to a wide array of ecosystems and climates. Because of its dry summers, the PNW was sensitive to large-scale climate perturbations in the past and may be vulnerable to climate change during the coming century. This chapter explores the resilience and vulnerability of PNW ecosystems with the MAPSS-CENTURY 1 (MC1) dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM). It investigates the major drivers of change in the PNW by running the MC1 DGVM in various configurations under future climate scenarios, selected to bind the uncertainties of future climate changes. The chapter focuses on how the interactions between climate, fire, and nitrogen drive change and resilience in the diverse PNW ecosystems. After calibration, MC1 compared favorably to historical conditions of vegetation types, carbon stocks, carbon fluxes, and burned area. Calibration of MC1 with and without nitrogen limitation yielded similar accuracies in all fields except for seasonal productivity." @default.
