- W166119360 abstract "Scientific Realism and unexpected mirades. One of the main arguments in favor of scientific realism is the one called “No-Miracle” Argument. Accordingly, scientific success would be a miracle without a realist explanation. The argument possesses an undeniable intuitive force, counteracted however by a counter-argument, persuasive by its simplicity: There are unexpected miracles, and there are many. This is exactly what the famous Laudan’s pessimistic meta-induction tries to show. Different strategies have been developed to impede Laudan’s argument. One of them points out that it is not true that the already abandoned past theories are simply false, nor that their theoretical terms lack real reference. This last path, in which Psillos, Worrall and Kitcher are occupied, faces serious difficulties since it can be easily accused of falling in circularities. This paper analyzes these objections and tries to show their real scope. Key words: Scientific Realism, Anti-realism, pessimistic meta-induction, divide et impera, reference, truth, no-miracle argument." @default.
