- W166144411 abstract "The honey bee's ability to communicate it's foraging experience is a valuable tool that allows the hive to recruit foragers to rewarding food sources using the waggle dance, or even curb recruitment of possibly dangerous food sources through the stop signal. Honey bees may encounter a variety of predators such as wasps and ambush predators while foraging. Here we show that predation attempts by these live predators can both increase stop signal production and cause a decrease in waggle dance recruitment. Our results show that bees that were physically attacked by live predators while foraging produced 37 fold more stop signals than bees that were stalked by freshly dead spiders; waggle dances were reduced by 3.8 fold. Attacks that were more aggressive led to more stop signals produced as well, but attack severity only reduced waggle dancing for bees foraging at further distances and not at a closer distance. In addition, the profitability of the resource had no affect on stop signal production. This study indicates that predation attempts directly affect forager recruitment" @default.
