- W166470610 abstract "ABSTRACT Lithium (Li) has been reported to have antipsychotic properties in some schizophrenic-like patients as well as mood stabilizing properties in bipolar illness. Affective disorder patients who are responsive to Li tend to show altered sodium-lithium counterflow across red blood cell (RBC) membranes, which results in altered in vitro intracellular to extracellular Li ratios. In the present study acute admissions to psychiatric inpatient facilities are shown to have a trimodal distribution of in vitro Li ratios while similar in vitro Li ratios in an age and sex matched control population are unimodal. Fifteen of 27 schizophrenic-like patients with in vitro Li ratios distributed outside the central (control) mode of the trimodal distribution appeared to have an antipsychotic response to Li alone on a subsequent Li trial. Both elevated in vitro Li ratios (> .38) and diminished in vitro Li ratios (" @default.
