- W166883283 abstract "Abstract. We present new Very Large Array Hi and OH Zeeman obser-vations toward Orion A with 25 ′′ and 45 ′′ resolution, respectively. SignificantZeeman line of sight magnetic fields are detected toward much of the Orion Acontinuum in two distinct velocity components. The measured field strengthsrange from ∼ −50 µG near the Trapezium region to ∼ −300 µG toward the‘Dark Bay’. Line of sight field strengths of ∼ −250 µG are also measured fromOH absorption lines toward the ‘Dark Bay’ region. From optical extinction andUVabsorptionlinesitisclearthattheHiandOHabsorptionarisesfroma“veil”of primarily neutral gas that covers much of the Orion A source. Photoioniza-tion models suggest that the Veil is located 1-3 pc in front of the Trapezium andhas an average density of 10 3.1 cm −3 . At this density the magnetic field energydominates the energy of nonthermal motions or gravity. Therefore, Orion’s Veilis the first interstellar environment where magnetic dominance appears to exist. 1. IntroductionComparison of high resolution optical and radio continuum data toward Orion Asuggests that there is significant extinction toward much of the nebula, partic-ularly toward the ‘dark bay’ region (O’Dell & Yusef-Zadeh 2000). Indeed thisextinction appears to be well correlated with the Hi column density, and thelayer of absorbing material has come to be dubbed ‘Orion’s Veil’. Due to theirlarge dipole moments, Hi and OH measured in absorption against the strongOrion A radio continuum can be used to probe the line of sight magnetic fieldstrength (B" @default.
