- W1669874910 abstract "This chapter outlines some of the understanding of the Earth's interior derived from seismology. The most fundamental approach to gleaning Earth structure from seismic waves is to measure arrival times of ground vibrations as a function of distance from the source. Seismograms from distant earthquakes are characterized by a sequence of discrete body wave arrivals followed by dispersed surface wave trains. Body wave travel-time analysis is often considered as a primary tool for studying Earth structure. However, complete waveform analysis allows even more information to be gleaned from seismic recordings, and has unraveled the complex interference effects involved in surface waves and normal modes. Earth's crust is the most important region of the interior, providing the environment, natural resources, and geological hazards that affect humanity. The complexity of structure and geological history of the continental crust are largely apparent from surface observations that provide important clues in the efforts to understand Earth's interior." @default.
