- W1670632383 abstract "Enteropathogenic strains of E.coli (EPEC) are essentially defined as those strains that exhibit each of the following characteristics—namely, the ability to cause diarrhea, the ability to produce a histopathology on the intestinal epithelium known as the attaching and effacing (A/E) lesion , and the inability to produce Shiga toxins. It is noted that the second characteristic distinguishes EPEC from most other pathotypes of diarrheagenic E.coli , including enteroaggregative E.coli (EAEC), enteroinvasive E.coli (EIEC), and enterotoxigenic E.coli (ETEC). The third characteristic distinguishes EPEC from Shiga toxin by producing E.coli (STEC or VTEC) and enterohemorrhagic E.coli (EHEC). It is also observed that typical EPEC strains that cause human infections generally carry a large virulence plasmid that allows them to produce bundle-forming pili and attach to epithelial cells in a characteristic pattern termed as localized adherence . However, other EPEC strains, known as atypical EPEC, lack these properties. EPEC infection leads to a watery diarrhea that can contain mucus. Associated symptoms include fever, malaise, vomiting, food intolerance, dehydration, and weight loss. EPEC diarrhea often lasts for 5–15 days, and can become chronic and result in a mortality rate as high as 50%." @default.
