- W1671365060 abstract "Background: Continued clinical research is necessary to improve the quality of healthcare provided. This is especially true where clinical trials and patient recruitments are concerned. The demand for better quality health research is indicative of the need for enhanced clinical research systems with the capability to effectively handle the transmission and exchange of health care data across applications, systems, specialties and organizations. Health data are stored in databases; therefore the desired exchange and transmission involves clinical research, database driven systems. Any database driven system is only as effective as its underlying data model. Objectives: To use a standard driven, HL7-based information modelling approach in the elicitation of requirements and the architectural design of clinical database research systems for supporting clinical trials based in secondary care. To discuss the experience gained based on the modelling work in order to understand the complexity of clinical research systems within the context of the broader healthcare enterprise, while realising the constraints across multiple secondary care specialties. Methods: The HL7 RIM is utilised as an abstract modelling template, where the common data elements and processes of secondary care research can be represented. This top-down approach can ensure that the provided solutions of e-trial and research database systems can be HL7 messaging aware, allowing syntactic interoperabilityResults: The paper argues the critical need for a generic data model, which is itself an outcome of previous successful phases of the lifecycle development, starting with the initial knowledge elicitation and requirements engineering processes using the Volere requirements capture template. The work also highlights the value of, and our approach to, the participation of the subject matter experts - as a crucial ingredient in designing the data model. Conclusion: The paper discusses HL7 RIM as our choice of a generic data model and a summary of findings, issues and design decisions made in architecting a robust and reusable data model for the secondary care health research systems." @default.
