- W16767597 abstract "According to the title of the third part of La Science experimentale written in 1663, Jean-Joseph Surin aims to 'traitefr] des choses en particulier qu'il a recues a l'occasion et ensuite de la possession de^Loudun (255). l Ήισ Jesuit priest, a native of Bordeaux, is typically discussed in the context of the possession of Loudun, the city where he was ordained as an exorcist for a convent of ''possessed Ursulines. Since 1632, these nuns had claimed to be under demoniac influence and gained national attention with their convulsive spectacles. Serving as a confessor to the prioress Jeanne des Anges, Surin is the only priest who managed to put an end to her possession and reestablish order in the convent. Surin's own destructive illness is lesser known to modern readers. Nevertheless, over a nineteen-year time frame, from 1637-1656, the exorcist himself became the victim of a diabolical enterprise that not only subdued his body (possession), but claimed his body and mind (becoming then obsession). La Science experimentale ror Choses de l'autre vie retraces the various steps of his obsession, reflects upon his experience, and offers guidance for the future. Obsession manifests itself as a perilous illness that annihilates Surin physically and mentally. Indeed, as the title of the third part announces, Surin intends to carry out a detailed investigation of the various manifestations of this malady and will provide us with an account of his struggle to liberate himself from it. He then makes a crucial addendum to the title: he appends in brackets that, what he will tell, est et ne se doit communiquer a personne (Science 255), a radical statement that is even fortified by the Latin quote in the prefatory note of La Science experimentale: Secretum meum mihi (129).2 What kind of information does Surin reveal, which instantly needs to be classified as top secret? Whom is this particular knowledge directed to and whom is it withheld from? Is Surin writing for himself only, intending to keep his secrets and pondering only upon the nature of this mysterious illness of obsession, animated by a profound need to talk to himself? Or is his revelation made available to a selected readership and circulated among a restricted audience? I propose here a detailed analysis of the revelations in the autobiographical parts of La Science experimentale (parts 2-3). At the same time, I will discuss the genre of a partially secret autobiography that addresses irreconcilable divisions between the author and a larger community that deserve more observation than so fer received. In addition, I would like to examine how Surin's illness comments on contemporary philosophical, political, and epistemological concerns. Due to its emphasis on mental and physical self-exploration, Surin's biographic description of illness bears close resemblance to a psychiatric autobiography. In parts two and three of La Science experimentale, he addresses his persistent experience of pain" @default.
