- W167698479 abstract "Abstract: The distinguishing feature of the microstructures of 2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx series aluminium alloys, used extensively by the automotive and aerospace industries, is that they contain a distribution of precipitates. The mechanical properties of these alloys are largely controlled by the nature of the interactions between dislocations and precipitates and therefore tailoring the precipitate distribution is one of the methods to improve the engineering performance. In this chapter, an outline of the current state-of-the-art in describing quantitatively (modeling) precipitation processes in Al alloys is presented. Emphasis is placed on the effects of time and temperature, but the role of alloy chemistry, precipitate shape and the role of plastic deformation are also introduced. The advantages and disadvantages of the different modeling approaches are outlined." @default.
