- W1677029646 abstract "Publisher Summary The pathogenicity of an infectious agent is dependent upon two key parameters: the virulence of the pathogen and the susceptibility of the host. Thus, when studying bacterial pathogenesis, it is crucial to use defined biologically relevant infection models. A wide range of animal models used to study infectious diseases are discussed. In addition, examples of experimental systems designed to study specific phases of infection, including enteritis, and recently developed techniques are described in the chapter. Further, measuring virulence is explained. When establishing a virulence assay to study pathogenesis, a whole range of factors require consideration. Ideally, the natural host of the pathogen in question is used; however, ethical or economic considerations often result in this ideal being compromised. In addition, there are parameters to quantify virulence. The LD 50 assay has been widely exploited for quantifying the virulence of organisms or the potency of toxins. Serial dilutions of the test preparation are made and inoculated by a defined route into groups of susceptible animals. Virulence is quantified by calculating the dose that kills 50% of the animals over a specified period. The chapter also discusses an overview of bacterial growth in vivo." @default.
