- W167704589 abstract "In his extensive study Les origines et la formation de la litt? rature courtoise en occident, Professor Reto Bezzola devotes many pages to a detailed enquiry into the life and poetry of Guillaume IX. For him Guillaume is ?le premier ? assimiler le service amoureux au service f?odal (2e partie, t. II, 252), ?celui qui le premier formula cet id?al de la ,domna' terrestre .. . cette ,imago' de la ,domna' ?minemment lointaine et ardemment d?sir?e (314). In his poetry the lady ?devient presque l'incarnation du Seigneur supr?me, auquel tout doit se soumettre (302). The view that Guillaume was the first exponent of amour courtois, that there was no previous poetic tradition of this kind on which he could have drawn, has often been denied. 1) I hope to add one conclusive argument against the theory that before Guillaume there was nothing. For one of his poems at least is a deliberate burlesque of the poetic conventions of amour courtois, which must have been in full flower for his joke to have had a point. There is, however, a far more radical question: is Guillaume a poet of amour courtois at all? Does he really see his lady as ideal, distant, celestial, almost divine? Does he really submit to her? Did he ever think of love-service towards a lady in terms of feudal service? ? Such things have never been denied. They have become commonplaces in histories of literature. It may seem foolhardy even to question them ? after all, can they not be settled swiftly and precisely? Of Guillaume's eleven songs in Jeanroy's edition (in the Classiques fran?ais du Moyen Age)," @default.
