- W1677951706 abstract "The contents of this thesis relate the design, characterization, and integration of sensing systems in order to obtain portable, simple, and power efficient solutions. A methodology of instrumentation system design is proposed in order to push the maturity of the systems technology at the end of the fundamental research. The challenges faced here focus on the interfacing principles of sensing elements by their insertion into triangular voltage oscillators. The data delivered by a sensor deforms the analog output of the oscillator and is extracted by mathematical methods. We investigate the use of such oscillators in two contexts: the interfacing of interdigitated electrode sensors for liquid sensing applications and the interfacing of inductive devices for the detection of abrupt variations of magnetic field. The first system we developed is an impedance liquid sensing system. Consisting in an interdigitated electrodes structure, the device is studied and modeled using FEM tools. The proposed interfacing principle consists in stimulating the device with a square current wave; resulting in a triangular output voltage of which shape contains the liquid properties. The next system is a detector of magnetic field variations. The sensing element is a planar inductor modeled by FEM tools similar to the IDE system. Being also based on a triangular voltage oscillating system, the interfacing method consists in varying the triangular frequency for each detected magnetic perturbation. Output characteristics are next defined to quantify the magnetic perturbations captured by the inductor. The system is tested for the Arc Fault Detection application." @default.
