- W16801894 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents an investigation whose aim was to determine that several kinds of unmyelinated C-fiber originating from somatic or visceral organs terminate in the dorsal horn of the cervical and lumbar spinal cord and what kind of terminal arrangements are formed in the terminal area. There are inherent problems in providing reliable data on the frequency of each unit element, even with an unbiased experimental procedure. In the experiments presented in the chapter, there is the limitation that units are noted only in the cases recorded stably enough to identify the receptive field and kept for a long enough time to inject intracellular horse-radish peroxidase (HRP) or phaseolus vulgaris (PHA). The principal finding from the limited number of units is the differences among sensory units in the cervical and the lumbar cord level. Cervical level high threshold mechamreceptor (HTM) fibers occupied half of the population of C-fibers and the sum of HTM and polymodal nociceptor (PN) incidence reaches about 80% of units. From the analysis of fiber swellings, large swellings found in the plexus area presumably function as synapses, and medium size swellings operate in the same manner based on electron microscopic studies." @default.
