- W168051109 abstract "Summary The generation in cell-mediated immune reactions of effector T lymphocytes is a result of a sequential process of cell interactions, triggered by antigen-fed macrophages. We investigated the question of what signals macrophages to signal lymphocytes? We suggest that this signal is emitted following activation ofmacrophages by antigen plus an Ig-bound tetrapeptide, L-threonyl-L-lysyl-L-prolyl-L-arginine, named tuftsin. When tuftsin was applied in culture to macrophages simultaneously with antigen, it increased dramatically the immunogenic effect of macrophages. The effects of various structural analogs of tuftsin on the immunogenic effect of antigen-fed macrophages suggest (a) that macrophages possess cell receptors for the specific sequence of the tetrapeptide, and (b) that the components which dominate the activation of the immunogenic signal of macrophages is the Pro-Arg sequence of tuftsin. Since quite a number of peptide hormones possess this sequence, we raise the possibility that the intracellular signal for the activation of programmed cells, i.e., the signal from the cell receptors for such hormones to the genome, might be generated by Pro-Arg or Arg-Pro sequences." @default.
