- W168450668 abstract "The contamination of groundwater and surface water is a consequence of the use of pesticides in the agriculture and out of the agriculture. Their significance for human health and the environment largely depends on the quantity applied annually within an area, the toxicological and ecotoxicological properties of the pesticides and the persistence in the environment. The regulations and guidelines for maximum allowable concentrations in drinking water are described for the EC, WHO, Germany, the former Soviet Union and the USA. An overview of the contamination of groundwater and drinking water in West and East Germany, Western Europe and the USA is given. With regard to the evaluation of the quantity of contaminated samples the results of various monitoring programmes in the mentioned countries are analyzed. The contamination of water bodies is described by selected data from Western and Eastern Europe. The ecotoxicological evaluation of the contamination of water bodies with pesticides is difficult because international harmonized guidelines." @default.
