- W1685280602 abstract "Workshop Abstract: Introduction. Heavy metals are known to cause birth defects, anemia, liver and kidney damage, and cancer, among other chronic exposure effects. Water-soluble nickel is particularly dangerous as a confirmed carcinogen as well as causing damage to vital organs. Incidentally, the Sealand region ground-water in Denmark contains above-average levels of nickel. In collaboration with Grundfos A/S we are developing a hybrid electrochemical/cantilever-based sensor with nickel as the target ion. This work evaluates the use of thiolated nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) thiol monlayers on gold to chelate the nickel ions for electrochemical detection, similar to methods used for cadmium [1] and copper [2] ions. A successfully evaluated electrochemical method will be integrated with a cantilever for hybrid, dual-mode sensing in the final prototype. Experimental. Working electrodes were fabricated on thermally-oxidized 100mm (100) silicon wafers by electron-beam evaporating 300 nm of Au onto an adhesion layer of 10 nm Ti. Lift-off was used to define the 1×1 mm 2 electrodes and 3×3 mm 2" @default.
