- W1685409499 abstract "The two main questions we aim to answer with this study are 1) what is the situationregarding trafficinduced noise and air pollution in the municipality of Burlov 1994 and howmany of the people living there are affected? 2) is the general method we chose, incombination with accessible data, suitable and sufficently precise to describe theenvironmental situation in the municipality? The studied air pollution agents are nitrogendioxid, carbon monoxid, VOC´s and soot. To enable the study of trafficinduced problems as awhole we have discussed the role roads and railroads play in the environment as seen from anecological perspective, concepts like fragmentation, corridors and barriers are discussed. Our foremost working tool has been a geographical information system, a GIS. A relationaldatabase containing three layers, demographical, road and railroad data, was constructed.Bufferzones stretching outwards from the centerline of the road/railroad were created, usingsimplified computation models. These layers were overlain on the demographical layer toenable calculations of the number of people affected by high air pollution concentrations/highnoise levels, and where in the municipality these people were located. In our results we quantify the number of persons living within bufferzones for the studiedconcentrations/levels. These results should be interpreted in a general way. The figures in theresults should only be used to locate problem areas and for overall physical planning.According to our results air pollution concentrations exceeding established limits are not anenvironmental problem to the people living in the municipality of Burlov. Even if theestablished limits are lowered by half its original value only few people will be subjected toenvironmental hazards. The exclusion of climatological factors in the air pollution modeladds to the uncertainty of our results. Our results also show that many of the inhabitants ofthe municipality are subjected to high noise levels from road traffic. Our result regardingnoise from railroad traffic is more difficult to interpret as it shows unreasonably high numbersof affected people. With certainty we can only say what happens to the first row of houseswithin the bufferzone measured from the noise source since all the values in the study are freefield values (noise reducing parameters excluded). To make future studies of this kind costeffectivewe suggest that a method is found which incorporates important noise reducingparameters in the computations. The demographical material consists of point data where, according to the nationalregistration, people who are registered in a house have been tied to the geographicalcoordinates of the buildings centerpoint. This way of aggregating people in points leads toimprecise results in the overlay-procedure.The general method we chose for our survey has, in combination with accessible data, beenshown to be imperfect. As for solely the choice of method we believe it to be suitable for thisand other similar studies. Our problem has been the form of the demographical data and thehigh degree of generalization used to simplify the calculations of the environmentalparameters." @default.
