- W1686680135 abstract "Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) refers to multiple techniques applied to support the failing heart. MCS is indicated in refractory heart failure patients as a bridge to transplantation, a bridge to recovery, or as destination therapy, in alternative to transplantation. For short-term periods, devices are paracorporeal, cumbersome, and do not allow patient ambulation. They have to be quick to insert and easy to use. Left, right, or biventricular support can be achieved. For longer support periods, devices are internal. The majority of these systems support only the left ventricle. In selected cases, a total artificial heart can be inserted, replacing both ventricles. Major limitations of chronic MCS are device-related infections, thromboembolic events, bleeding, and device failure. These complications are less frequent since we switched from pulsatile volume-displacement devices to continuous-flow pumps." @default.
