The clinical features, histological type, prognostic factors, and resids ofsurgical treatment were retrospectively evaluated in 20 patients with thymoma. Twelve had myasthenia gravis and two had associated polymyosytis. Thymoma was encapsulated in 12 cases and invasive in 8. The most common histological type was lymphoepithelial (11 cases). The 12 encapsulated thymomas could be resected, but two patients with myasthenia died in the immediate postoperative period. The remaining 10 patients are healthy 3 months-14 years after surgery (mean 8,7 years). In the group of 8 invasive thymomas, biopsy was carried out in 8 and resection in 3. The patients in whom the tumor could not be resected underwent postoperative radiotherapy. Three patients died of thymoma between 6 months and 5 years after surgery, two of them with intraabdominal metastases. The three patients in whom invasive thymoma was resected are still alive 1, 3 and 19 years after surgery. However, one of them, in whom resection was palliative, required two new operations due to local relapse and additional radiotherapy." @default.
