- W169676267 abstract "The linear no-threshold hypothesis (LNH), which states that any amount of radiation however small may be harmful or even lethal, was formulated in the early 1950s and shortly thereafter was adopted by both the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement and the International Committee on Radiological Protection as the cornerstone of radiation protection policy. This acceptance of the LNH was based on an incomplete understanding of the linear functions that were observed in a number of experiments and their possible ramifications. Thus, it was based purely on the {open_quotes}weight of scientific opinion,{close_quotes} which, in turn, was based on extrapolation from higher doses. The main assertion in this communications is that the units now used on the abscissa of the observed linear functions are inappropriate. Also, several critical concepts have been ignored: (a) intensive versus extensive quantities; (b) that several levels of biological organization exist; and (c) the medical-toxicological situation in which concern is for the individual as contrasted with the public health situation in which the concern is for the health of a population. This has led to internal inconsistencies that warrant revision of the concepts underlying the LNH." @default.
