- W169743609 abstract "This report is an account of research conducted on the equilibrium and kinetic relationships of selected limestones in an environment simulating that in an operating wet-scrubbing system. In particular, the reactivity and magnesium availability of selected limestones in the simulated environment were studied. The preliminary effort included a literature survey, an investigation of a method for the determination of dolomite in limestone by x-ray diffraction, and an equilibrium study to provide data from which to calculate liquid-phase activities, of calcium, magnesium, and carbonate. Information gained from these tasks was used in the subsequent research on kinetic relationships. This involved the determination of dissolution rates of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate in a batch solids, flow-through liquid (BSFTL) reactor over a range of process conditions. Several conclusions were drawn. High solution concentrations of magnesium were found to inhibit the dissolution of dolomitic limestones and to enhance dissolution of limestones containing solid solution magnesium. Among limestones, an increase in the magnesium content causes a decrease in the overall limestone dissolution rate but an increase in the amount of magnesium dissolved. Variables which most affected the limestone dissolution rate included pH, temperature, particle size, and aqueous sulfite concentration.
