- W1699698900 abstract "If present trends continue, most educated women will work until marriage or the arrival of the first child, only to resume employment when their children are much older. In spite of the increasing participation of educated married women in the labor force (Ginzberg, 1968) the dedicated career woman is still rather rare, not much more prevalent than earlier (Oppenheimer, 1968). Participation in the labor force in adult life reflects many factors, at least one of which is career aspirations developed during the adolescent years. Research on career motivation has often attempted to characterize the predominant mode of college women's adult aspirations. Some researchers have argued that college women are likely to view their adult role as a dual one including both marriage and career (Shab, 1967), but others think that careers are a second choice and that planning is directed toward finding some occupation which would provide a career, if that became necessary (Empey, 1958). The strength of motivation for a career varies widely even among women at a professionally oriented and relatively homogeneous college (Almquist & Angrist, 1969). Most women plan to and will work at various times, but aspirations for work as a central feature of adult life, regardless of financial necessity and under conditions of free choice still do not characterize the majority. What distinguishes the career salient women from their more conven tional classmates? One explanation holds that these women are deviant both in their early development and in their family relationships. In a previous paper we presented evidence and argument for the idea that" @default.
