- W170051551 abstract "This chapter consists of two parts. The first is dedicated to a brief review of a selected number of studies on the processes of recognizing a word written in Chinese characters in Chinese and Japanese readers. The work reported consists of studies on lateralization, reports on aphasia and developmental dyslexia, and experimental studies on the Stroop effect with Chinese characters. The main conclusion proposed here is that there is not clear evidence supporting the hypothesis that reading a word written in a logographic writing system involves processes different from those involved in reading a word in an alphabetic system. The second part reports on some experimental evidence on the process of naming logographically written words. The first experiment investigated lexical decomposition in the recognition of complex characters, and showed that during the process of recognizing these characters the meaning of the component radicals can be retrieved, even when they are not semantically related to the meaning of the whole character. The second and the third studies were concerned with the processes of the activation of graphemic, phonological and semantic information when reading Chinese characters, and offered some evidence on the time course of the activation of this information during word recognition." @default.
