- W170152357 abstract "The adoption of the Performance Graded (PG) Binder Specifications developed in Superpave has improved asphalt concrete mixture properties, particularly in the northern states. Asphalt binders can now be specifically engineered for North Dakota’s climatic conditions to provide the high temperature deformation resistant properties for high summer temperatures and the low temperature thermal cracking resistance necessary for extremely cold winter temperatures. To meet the expanded PG specifications for extreme temperature conditions, asphalt suppliers usually turn to the use of polymers, acid treatment, foaming, air-blowing, or blending of asphalt. In spite of this, North Dakota has an extensive performance history with non-polymer modified asphalts that meet PG 58-34 specifications. The typical consistency and quality of the asphalt produced from this crude source has for some years been documented. A study has been conducted to evaluate the hot mix asphalt (HMA) performance in locally produced Superpave mixtures. The Superpave mixes were prepared using North Dakota’s locally processed aggregates. Polymer and non-polymer modified asphalt binders from three suppliers were used. Lime was also added to some of the mixes. The HMA performance was evaluated based on the rut resistance of the various Superpave mixes utilizing the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA). The study concluded that non-polymer modified asphalt binders can produce competitive rut resistant Superpave mixes under dry conditions. Although, their rut resistance under submerged conditions was outperformed by the polymer modified mixes, the use of non-polymer modified mixes in North Dakota is still a viable option at current binder cost levels." @default.
