- W170324896 abstract "Building a Collection for Your Aging Baby Boomers As a business librarian, I'm drawn to statistics, particularly those that impact the marketplace. Here's one mind-boggling fact that relates to one of the most significant trends of the twenty-first century, according to consulting and market research firm Third Age Media (www. thirdagemedia.com/corp/vision. html), one of the country's seventy-six million baby boomers turns fifty every seven seconds. The term Third Age describes the time of life after youth and middle age, and baby boomers in this group are referred to as Third Agers. The graying of the baby boomers (those individuals born between 1946 and 1964) is front-page news in the business press. In its September 6, 1999 cover story, tided Why Retire?, Barron's analyzed the potential economic impact of millions of baby boomers postponing retirement. As baby boomers have exhibited unpredictable behavior, various scenarios exist about boomer retirement. While some economists think that baby boomers will retire early in order to pursue a second career, other economists warn that baby boomers (given their propensity to spend rather than save) can't afford to retire at traditional retirement age, let alone retire early. The publishing industry, like many segments of the economy, realizes that the fifty-plus population represents a huge lucrative market. The editors of Ladies Home Journal recently launched More, a magazine directed to mature women. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) magazine Modern Maturity's face-lift was major news in the August 8, 1999 issue of the New York Times. What are mature baby boomers interested in reading? It appears that over-fifty readers study retirement planning (since many realize that they haven't saved enough for retirement), health (especially books about postponing the aging process), and travel (mature baby boomers have a disproportionate share of discretionary income and like to have fun). This column describes some of the best print and electronic resources for Third Agers. Building a Collection for Your Aging Baby Boomers What do Richard Gere, Bruce Springsteen, and Twiggy have in common? All three celebrities recently turned fifty. They were not alone. Ten thousand baby boomers celebrate their fiftieth birthday every day and the fifty-plus age group is the fastest growing segment of the adult population in the United States.(1) Various terms that describe this group include Third Agers, fifty-plus-ers, the new old, and the mature market. Getting old is not what it used to be. Statistics show that Americans above the age of fifty are healthier, wealthier, and far more active than previous generations.(2) Mature baby boomers are changing stereo-types about aging. Fifty-plus-ers will shape American society for several decades. By the year 2020, it is estimated that they will account for more than one-third of the population.(3) This segment of the population exercises tremendous economic clout, controlling more than 40 percent of all discretionary income.(4) Their influence will become more apparent as a large number of baby boomers reach retirement age in the next two decades. The first baby boomer turns fifty-five in the year 2001 and the last member of this generation turns fifty-five in the year 2019. More Americans will be retiring between the years 2001 and 2019 than in any other period in history.(5) Mass retirement could be particularly problematic for unionized factories. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, a writer quipped that more plants are worried about the year 2001 problem than the Y2K problem.(6) On the other hand, some futurists predict that boomers who retire early will become entrepreneurs, using their experience to start their own businesses.(7) Higher education will also feel the impact of retirement. A recent survey indicates that almost one-third of full-time faculty in American colleges and universities are age fifty-five or older. …" @default.
