- W17036659 abstract "If indeed, in the past, the fraternal relationship between Giuseppe and Angelo Garibaldi had been demonstrated without reasonable doubt, as documents I recently discovered at the Turin State Archives1 now prove, then the year 2000 would have been a perfect occasion to have organized a double anniversary in the United States: one anniversary concerns the justly famous Giuseppe Garibaldi, who arrived in New York exactly 150 years before year 2000, in 1850, during his Second Exile; and the other almost forgotten Angelo, who arrived in New York in 1825, exactly 175 years before year 2000, and then in Philadelphia, where presumably he took up residence at the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Sardinia at 219 Spruce Street2 on 29th August 1825, arriving there towards 7 o'clock in the early evening of a hot, late-summer's day. Anniversaries, such as 150 and 175, have an appeal and are worth remembering, so inducive of celebration. Giuseppe, called in all the history books the Hero of the Two Worlds that is, of the Old and the New for his dedication to the liberty, the independence and the dignity of man in two hemispheres, is a familiar figure. Angelo, on the other hand, lies overlooked in some Philadelphian cemetary or ossuary, forgotten.3 For a moment let us spend some time with Angelo, for he deserves remembering. all we know, Giuseppe only once mentions an American brother in his writings or rather, in those writings of his now in our possession to consult and study. In his Memoirs, Chapter One, while describing his infancy and youth, he shows how this elder brother, Angelo America encouraged me to study the beautiful Italian language. And, in fact, in that passage, Giuseppe points out that, in part, he owed his interest in the study of Italian history and literature to this brother's encouragement, though it may have come from afar. For he writes, From America. Which prompts the immediate question : But how did this brother of Giuseppe's get there To be immediately followed by another, more penetrating : And which America was he referring to ? After all, 'America' as a geographical concept is not only enormous but also tantalizingly vague. In 1825 the first Consul General of the Kingdom of Sardinia to the United States of America, a certain Gaspare Deabbate left Philadelphia, where he had come to establish the Consulate in 1820, to return to Italy. For health reasons he was obliged to give up his post which he had held with distinction for some five years. To the vacant post at the Philadelphia Consulate a certain Cavalry Major, Ignazio Vincenzo Caravadossy de Thoet, was appointed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Turin informed him of his appointment in mid-February 1825,4 though his nomination did not become formal until 17th May of that year,5 which meant that he had to leave the Kingdom post haste, the Consulate being by then completely vacant." @default.
