- W1703792816 abstract "Background: The nose is the first portion of the respiratory system to come into contact with air pollution particles, among then, organic compounds that could act as endocrine releasers. Objectives: Identify and quantify in the nasal epithelium of mice: estrogenic receptors-β (ERβ), aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR),cytochrome P450 enzymes: CYP1A1, 1A2, 1B1 and mucus profile. Methods: Male BALB/c mice (n=32) and female were divided in three estrous cycles: proestrus, estrus and diestrus (n=84) and in ambient air or exposure to concentrated ambient particle (CAPs) and studying through RT-PCR: Erβ-1 , Erβ-2, Ahr, Cyp1a1, Cyp1a2, Cyp1b1 ; immunohistochemistry and morphometry the expression of ERβ and AhR and mucus profile: acid - Alcian Blue and neutral – Periodic Acid Schiff9s. The total concentration was 600 μg.m-³ with diameter of 2.5 µm (PM 2.5 ). Exposure was for 5 days/week, for ≥ 45 days. Results: There were differences in Erβ-2 mRNA to CAPs-exposed (p=0.016), and a significant decrease in Erβ-2 mRNA in CAPs female compared to CAPs male (p=0.036). Cyp1b1 mRNA was significantly less in the CAPs-exposed group compared with the ambient air group in diestrus female (p=0.036). The ERβ was over-expressed of the estrus cycle CAPs females (p=0.005), and the AhR was decreased in the proestrus cycle CAPs females (p=0.048). The CAPs led to increased acidic content of mucus in male (p=0.048), and decreased in female (p=0.040), compared to the ambient air group. Conclusion: This study showed there were different responses to air pollution in nasal epithelium between males and females that would be related to the predisposition of the females to present more susceptibility to airway respiratory disease." @default.
