- W17064069 abstract "From 1955 until shortly before his death in 1970 Joseph Wood Krutch (long-time drama critic for Nation, biographer of Samuel Johnson and Henry David Thoreau, latter-day naturalist) wrote a column for The American Scholar called If You Don't Mind My Saying So. Employing familiar essay form, Krutch used column to explore innumerable subjects that entered his erudite mind. For nearly a decade and a half he philosophized on a wide range of topics from Is Homer Obsolete? to 'The Sloburbs, to cite just two examples. At time of Krutch's death, Hiram Haydn (The American Scholar editor who originally drafted Krutch to write column) called If You Don't Mind My Saying So the most popular feature of The column was popular because Krutch expressed profound ideas in simple, lucid prose, something he had learned to do as a student writing for his college literary magazine. This clear and precise manner of expression would later help Krutch achieve a goal he had set for himself as a young writer living in Knoxville, Tennessee: to be recognized someday as a true intellectual. That goal was realized in 1929 with publication of The Modern Temper, a book Bertrand Russell described as profoundly interesting and very penetrating.
