- W170841398 abstract "ABSTRACT This paper proposes another category for theclassification of intelligent monitoring and diagnosis ofcomplex continuous reactive systems. In first place, the state of the art in diagnosis is reviewedand afterwards, a brief description of our work withSACHEM systems follows, where the lack of modellingtools for reactive systems arises. So, a new categorization in computer-aided monitoringand diagnosis is suggested to clarify the notions of eventsand temporal windows within intelligent monitoring anddiagnosis systems. Keywords: intelligent monitoring and diagnosis, tools for modelling knowledge-based systems, reactive systems, events, temporal windows. 1. Introduction The literature is almost unanimous in recognizingthe existence of a major problem in the specificationand design of large and complex reactive systems[6]. A reactive system is characterized by being, to alarge extent, event-driven, continuously having toreact to external and internal stimuli. Examplesinclude cars, communication networks, computeroperating systems, the man-machine interface ofmany kinds of ordinary software, and many othercomplex industrial processes, such as the operationof blast furnaces, for example [13].Since there is no operational mathematical model forthe dynamics of reactive complex continuousprocesses, the usual means of control theories cannotbe used to design an automatic controller, suited forsuch complex systems. In addition, processesrequired to reach a very high level of economicperformance tend to be complex. In the past three decades, however, severalapproaches have been proposed for dealing with thiscomplexity. One consists of compensating the lackof a mathematical model for the process dynamicsby the knowledge used by the human operator whocontrols those complex processes.Recent advances in different computer sciences suchas artificial intelligence and simulation proposemethods, techniques and tools to exploit suchinformal knowledge, and new kind of controllershave been developed since 1980 [8].In this paper, we aim to compare differentapproaches for discrete event control of continuousprocesses, whose behavioral models come fromexpert knowledge. In first place, we recall the general definition ofdiagnosis and we describe the state of the art inintelligent monitoring and diagnosis of industrialsystems; namely the heuristic-based, the model-based and the task-based approach. As this classification does not cover the need wefaced while dealing with SACHEM systems (whichare described afterwards), we finally propose theinclusion of a new category in approaches tointelligent monitoring and diagnosis." @default.
