The experimenter analyzed secondarydata obtained from the Individual Development and EducationalAssessment (IDEA) Center’s Feedback for Department Chairs system.Data came from 604 department chairs and their corresponding 9,125faculty members across the years 2003 to 2007. Faculty completedthe 70-item Faculty Perceptions of Department Head/Chair Survey,and their department chair responded to the 30-item DepartmentHead/Chair Information Form. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) ofdepartment chair ratings revealed three underlying dimensions ofadministrative responsibilities, ranked in order of importance:Departmental Operations, Faculty Enhancement, and Research andAssessment. EFAs of faculty ratings determined one factorexplained the department chair’s personalcharacteristics—Flexibility/Adaptability—and one factor explainedthe department chair’s performance of administrativemethods—Communication and Coordination. Items with high componentmatrix coefficients were summed to produce scales with highreliability for each factor. Multiple regression analysis indicatedthat faculty ratings of the department chair’sFlexibility/Adaptability and Communication and Coordinationexplained 83% of the variance in their ratings of the departmentchair’s overall effectiveness (p < .001). Ratings onCommunication and Coordination explained the most variance. Facultyratings of the department chair’s performance of administrativeresponsibilities also explained 83% of the variance in theirratings of the chair’s overall effectiveness (p < .001). FacultyEnhancement showed the strongest relationship. The findings help toexplain the underlying dimensions of the academic departmentchair’s effectiveness and the role of faculty ratings inevaluation." @default.
