- W1712833021 abstract "Historians more or less accept the notion that what societies choose to preserve and interpret is a constant source of debate because those decisions reflect evolving cultural values. As increasing scientific data is changing public attitudes about natural resource exploitation and preservation, it makes sense for historians to help educate the public, through research, preservation, and interpretation, on the issues important to the sustainability of our planet. My (probably overly ambitious) aim in this concluding essay is to attempt to summarize and distill some of this recent activity, flush out the key areas of interest that the essays in this issue identified, and, finally, offer a convincing argument that environmental sustainability is within the purview of historical inquiry and should be an integral piece of public history education and practices. At a session on climate change at the 2012 OAH/NCPH joint conference, Phillip Scarpino argued that the public should view climate change as a cultural problem involving issues of diversity, nature, and faith. Stories of landscape changes and resilience can have an impact on values, and the historian can contribute by interpreting and recording those stories. Also at that session, Mark Carey agreed that climate change is as much a story of cultural values as it is of science. Through collaboration with scientists, historians can help clarify cause and effect, assess impact and change, identify the role of race, gender, class, power, authority, colonialism, and post-colonialism in illuminating the context of climate change and even the science of climate change itself. Because of the new world that climate change will bring, public" @default.
