- W17133634 abstract "This chapter presents the experimental results of in vivo intracerebral monitoring techniques to study conscious human brain. The chemical mediators involved in seizure onset, spread, and spontaneous arrest are unknown. Although it is most unlikely that a primary disorder of a single neurotransmitter is responsible for the seizure propensity in the human epilepsies, an imbalance in neurotransmission favoring excitation may be involved. Excessive excitatory amino acid (EAA) release has been implicated as one such mechanism of epilepsy. Microdialysis is a technique that can be applied to the investigation of dynamic events in regional extracellular fluid of the human brain. Moreover, direct evidence has been found for increased basal extracellular fluid (ECF) concentrations of glutamate and its prolonged post-ictal release in the human epileptogenic hippocampus compared to the contralateral, homotopic site. The data suggests that neurons in epileptonic regions are exposed to high amounts of ECF glutamate and that the concentrations reached may result in both ongoing neurtoxicity as well as play a role in the development and maintenance of an epileptic focus." @default.
