- W1713787840 abstract "This chapter focuses on the subjects on the modes of action of avermectins and praziquantel, purine and pyrimidine metabolism in protozoan parasites, polyamines in hemoflagellates, carbohydrate metabolism and surface glycoprotein in African trypanosomes, and kinetoplast DNA in kinetoplastida. The avermectins act on nematodes by rapid immobilization of the worms without affecting their normal muscular tone. AVM has no effect on the contractility of dorsal muscle strip of ascaris, and exerts equal paralyzing effects on the wild type and levamisole-resistant mutant of the free-living earth worm caenorhabditis elegans that suggest that AVM does not act on the cholinergic neuromuscular junctions of the two nematodes, on which levamisole acts as an acetylcholine agonist. AVM also decreased the inhibitory motor neuron signals at the ascaris neuromuscular junction that presumably also has GABA as the transmitter. An adenine derivative, arprinocid (9-(2-chloro-6-fluorobenzyl) adenine), has been found to be a potent anticoccidial agent. It acts by blocking the transport of hypoxanthine into the parasites. Researchers found a potent inhibitor of mammalian and yeast S-adenos lmethionine decarboxylase, methylglyoxal-bis (guanylhydrazone) (MGBG) that is known to possess anti-hemoflagellate activity and inhibitory effects on hemoflagellate S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase. It was also noticed that T. brucei glycolysis under anaerobic conditions generates equimolar glycerol and pyruvate from one glucose molecule with no obvious means for ATP net gain. One hypothesis calls for the possible reversal of the glycerol kinase catalyzed reaction to produce glycerol and ATP from glycerol-3-phosphate and ADP" @default.
