- W1715679912 abstract "The mitochondria of human cells are descendants of ancient protobacteria that were engulfed by and drawn into a symbiotic relationship with eukaryotic cells some 3 billion years ago. In humans, mitochondria are the major oxygen consumers and the predominant organelles of aerobic organs such as brain, heart, and red skeletal muscle (colored by the high concentration of mitochondrial cytochrome contents). In contrast, liver mitochondria may be mostly committed to biosynthesis, and neutrophils usually do not contain any. Mitochondria still retain a small fraction of their original genome and unique double-walled structure, testimony to the engulfment of the ancient protobacteria (the present-day inner membrane and matrix) and their entrapment within intracellular vacuoles (the outer mitochondrial membrane). The impermeable inner membrane contains special iron–sulfur and ancient heme-containing proteins that extrude H ions, creating a “charged halo” that distinguishes the symbionts biophysically." @default.
