- W1716680909 abstract "This chapter explores the use of bioindicators for process monitoring in anaerobic treatment of effluents. Investigations on microbial population in digesters and its distribution on support surface are important to deepen knowledge about the process and for its optimization. However, the data obtained for different reasons are not much useful for monitoring the running of the digesters. Physical and chemical parameters are generally used for the monitoring of the digesters, while microbiological and enzymatic parameters are usually neglected. Determination of the number of microorganisms can be done by traditional techniques, such as counting of colonies on plates, MPN determination in the liquid medium, direct count by optical microscope, or, for methanogenic bacteria, by fluorescent microscopy and by immunological techniques based on the use of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. Given the importance of anaerobic digestion for the treatment of sludges, more attention should be paid to anaerobic digesters to improve their performance to reach the level of high technology. The effluents from these digesters treated waters and biogas, do not have a high market value, but they contribute significantly to protect the environment, which is a resource beyond any market value." @default.
