- W172031567 abstract "This chapter discusses the cyto-embryology of echinoderms and amphibia. The cyto-embryological presentation of early development has been based chiefly on the mode of cell binding. The attachment of individual blastomeres to the hyaline layer is presumably a more primitive method than binding by the lamellar structures. In this stage, the blastomeres are physiologically isolated from their neighbors, in spite of the fact that the mutual positions are fixed. In this sense, the formation of the lamellar structure is a revolutionary change, because it is not a simple morphological happening but seems to have definite physiological counterparts—such as the loss of permeability to sugar and the establishment of metachronism in the ciliary beat. All these changes are direct expression of the development of intercellular communication. If such communication can be taken as a characteristic of a tissue, the structural organization of the sea urchin larva is rather abruptly raised from the cell assembly level to the tissue level in a clear-cut correlation with the ninth cleavage cycle." @default.
