- W17281846 abstract "An expanded bed is used in which the solids are derived from the coal which is placed in random motion by the upflow of a coal slurry, hydrocarbon liquid and H to produce > 80% conversion of coal to gas and liquid petroleum products. Relatively low pressure hydrogenation of coal particles fed in as a slurry is accomplished with a conversion of > 80% of the coal solids and a net oil production of > 50%. The solid ash particles remain after hydroconversion of the coal act as catalysts. The ebullating pumps, some high-pressure piping, and catalyst addition and withdrawal systems are eliminated. Preferred operating conditions are 750 to 950/sup 0/F and 500 to 3000 psig. Coal throughput is 15 to 300 lb/hr/ft/sup 3/ of reactor space, and the yield of unreacted coal as char is < 10% of the amount of moisture- and ash-free coal. The liquid velocity is 1 to 30 gal/min/ft/sup 3/ of horizontal cross-section of the reaction zone. Thus, Pittsburgh Seam coal is padded through reactor at 850/sup 0/F and 2250 psig H partial pressure. The results are compared with those obtained with 1/16-in. Co molybdate extrudates on Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ Reactor liquids containing ash andmore » unconverted coal is recycled along with heavy gas oil obtained by vacuum distillation of the reactor liquid stream. The lower H consumption is reflected in the quality of the light products. This deficiency is rectified by further downstream treatment where more selective catalysts and operating conditions can be used. The same coal is processed by using a low recycle ratio of vacuum gas oil and recycling a filtered liquid along with reactor liquid. The combination increases the heavy oil concentration in the reactor and permits increased conversion of heavy oils to lighter products. The overall yield of liquid obtained in the ash-containing reactor is 74.9 vs. 76.2% in the reactor containing the catalyst, (14.5 vs. 20.3% for the C/sub 4/-400/sup 0/F liquids.« less" @default.
