- W172868100 abstract "The development and demonstration of a prototype diesel engine exhaust emission control system for urban buses is described. The system design concept is based upon catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and odorous oxygenated organic compounds. Removal of nitrogen oxides (NO/sub x/) is based upon catalytic oxidation of nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide (NO/sub 2/) and subsequent absorption of NO/sub 2/ in an alkaline molten carbonate salt scrubber. The system was demonstrated in a city bus. The California 1975 heavy-duty vehicle standards were attained except for reduction of NO/sub x/. To meet future California requirements of less than 5 gm/B-Hp-Hr of combined hydrocarbons and NO/sub x/, larger residence times are required. The resulting muffler size may not be compatible with bus installation constraints. Advantages and disadvantages of the diesel exhaust emission control system are discussed." @default.
