- W172955807 abstract "Following the observation of Russian scientists of a greater accumulation of nitrogenous substances and of a smaller piling-up of carbohydrates in different higher plants under blue light exposure (Voskresenskaya 1952), it could be shown that short-wave visible radiation caused an increased loss in reserve carbohydrates in several species of unicellular green algae. In the upper line of Table 1 data for autotrophically grown Chlorella cells, in which photosynthesis had been inhibited by application of 10-5 mol/1 DCMU to their normal growth medium are given. Such cells consumed about one half of their endogenous carbohydrates when kept in darkness, but lost two thirds of it when exposed to blue light for 5 h. In the lower line comparable data are listed for equally poisoned cell samples, this time, however, suspended in plain phosphate buffer instead of in growth medium. During the same time these cells used up less carbohydrates; but again lost about 30% more on blue illumination. These results make the enhancement of carbohydrate degradation by short-wave visible radiation as a consequence of biosynthesis of new proteins unlikey; they rather point to the catabolism of carbohydrate itself as the target for blue light action." @default.
