- W1730319475 abstract "Purpose: The Magnet Recognition Program (MRP) requires evidence that the nursing practice environment supports staff to provide optimal care, access professional development opportunities and participate in hospital affairs. The primary aim of this research was to evaluate clinical nurses’ work environment to obtain data in preparation for Magnet redesignation. The secondary aim was to compare the results from our pre-designation and post designation surveys. Methods: The Practice Environment Scale, Australia (PES-AUS) modified from the PES-NWI, was administered to all clinical nurses’ via an online survey which was made available to all nurses on computers at the clinical workstations which could be accessed during their working hours. Strategies to enhance the survey response rate included the leadership team stressing salience and importance of collecting data for Magnet redesignation; the judicious use of incentives; and the hospital-wide promotion of the survey through educational sessions and posters. Results: A robust response rate of 94% was achieved in the post designation survey indicating a high level of staff satisfaction and engagement of nurses in their practice environment. There was a small but statistically significant decrease in the subscale, Nursing Unit manager Ability, Leadership, and Support of Nurses (3.17 pre designation compared to 3.09 post designation, p=0.04). There was no significant difference in the mean scores of the other subscales or composite scale (see table 1).
