- W1732028360 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the application of the ion-exchange method in the removal of metallic ions from waters and sewages. The ion-exchange method helps in the removal of all ions from a solution or in the separation of one substance from another. It allows for selective removal of ionic impurities and deionization. Ion-exchange separations are based on selectivity. Selectivity is the ability to choose some ions rather than others. It helps in predicting the course of ion-exchange reactions and their practical application. The factors affecting ion-exchange selectivity include charges of ions being exchanged, types of functional groups, specific interactions in the ion exchanger, composition of ion exchanger phase, crosslinking, temperature, and formation of complexes in the solution. The disadvantages of the ion-exchange method include slow kinetics resulting from the limited interfacial size and its poor wettability by aqueous solutions. The main drawback is the loss of the active substance during purification. Improvement of ion-exchange capacity is possible by interpolymerization." @default.
