- W173531447 abstract "This chapter focuses on the localization of specific areas in diseased tissues infected by mycoplasma. Studies based on Mycoplasma fermentans that is systemic, especially in immune compromised patients are considered. Mycoplasmas are prokaryotic organisms like bacteria; infection with M. fermentans does not induce prominent inflammatory responses in the infected tissues. Because the mycoplasma itself causes an atypical immune response in the infected hosts, characteristic histopathological features of bacterial infections, such as neutrophilic responses, are often missing. Apparent parenchymal cell damage and cytopathological changes found in diseased organs lacking the associated acute form of tissue inflammatory response become a clue to a possible M . fermentans infection. In the lung, M. fermentans infections lead to increased numbers of chronic inflammatory cells in interstitium and intraalveolar spaces. M. fermentans infection is related to enlarged ballooned alveolar macrophages and hyalin membrane formation. In the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, large areas of parenchyma die, leaving ghost-like cells. To localize specific areas with concentrated M. fermentans infection in these tissues, monoclonal antibodies and immunohistochemical methods are used to detect M. fermentans-specific antigens. Electron microscopy study of the areas highly positive for the mycoplasmal antigens provides supportive evidence by localizing mycoplasmas in cells from the stained area. Immunohistologic location of positive cells and areas with marked mycoplasmal-specific antigen, plus confirmation by electron microscopy, are sufficient for general diagnostic purposes." @default.
