- W1736376927 abstract "This chapter describes sphingolipids; their chemistry, distribution, biosynthesis, and turnover; regulation of glycosphingolipid metabolism; and biological activities and functional roles of sphingolipids. Various types of sphingolipids, such as sphingoid bases, ceramides, and glycosphingolipids are also discussed in the chapter. Enzymes involved in the synthesis of sphingolipids are membrane-bound or integral membrane proteins, and as such, they are very hydrophobic and often unstable in a membrane-free environment. Plasma membrane-bound and extracellular sphingolipids are degraded in lysosomes by specific acid hydrolases. Sphingolipids and their metabolites are believed to have important cellular functions and are ubiquitous constituents of membranes in animals, plants, and some lower forms of life. The primary and three dimensional structures of the carbohydrate chains are sufficiently diverse to provide an explicit biological information system for the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation, modulation of transmembrane signalling mechanisms, cell–cell and cell–substratum recognition, and cell transformation and tumor progression." @default.
