- W173660982 abstract "Gulf Coast lignites are associated with coastal plain, delta plain, and fluvial back-swamp environments that characteristically produce fine grained impermeable shale and clay-shale units with irregular abandoned stream or distributary-channel aquifer sands, or marine transgressive aquifer sands. Field and laboratory studies determined that a 100 ft deep reclaimed mine subsides (redensifies) at a rapid rate, ranging from 300 ft/yr one day after mining to 0.2 ft/yr five years after mining. More than 80 percent of the mine surface settlement occurs within 3 years. Laboratory testing, with field confirmation, has determined that the hydraulic conductivity of clay-shale material decreases rapidly from 10/sup -3/ cm/sec at 5 ft of burial to less than 10/sup -7/ cm/sec below 40 ft of burial. The hydraulic conductivity of overburden sand decreases from 10/sup -2/ cm/sec to 10/sup -4/ - 10 /sup -5/ cm/sec after mining and reclamation. Field studies at a reclaimed mine have determined that the groundwater table has not reestablished after 10 years. Infiltration of rainwater is limited to the upper few feet, the root zone, due to the weathering of the clay-shale overburden. This study has concluded that the hydrogeology of a reclaimed surface mine is controlled by the climate, pre-mine hydrogeology, more » and the stratigraphy of the mine site, and that the risk of aquifer pollution is minimal in most cases.« less" @default.
