• W1738001110 abstract "The existing drainage systems on agricultural lands, no matter whether well maintained or neglected, continue to operate spontaneously and provide more or less favourable conditions for tillage and crop growth (except of seriously damage parts of the systems) . To be able to quantify their hydrological roles, one has to know how the drainage systems look like and operate. This can only be achieved if the drainage systems and their positions in the landscape are described and categorised. About 25 % of the total agricultural land in the Czech Republic has been drained, almost exclusively by subsurface tile drainage systems. The documentation of existing drainage systems is stored in the data base and archives of the State Administration of Land Reclamation and Improvement (SMS). The authors have been attempting to digitise some of the existing maps and to combine them with the existing alphanumeric data base and with other available GIS coverages, such as the digital terrain models. The paper reports on results obtained in few typical subcatchments of the Orlice river, East Bohemia. The preliminary results include maps and histograms of the age of drainage systems, maps of drainage densities (drained area to total area ratios) and maps and categorisations of drainage systems with respect to various criteria (such as the average slope steepness of the terrain). It is concluded that this effort is useful, especially when it is supplemented by suitable techniques for estimation of the hydrological behaviour of drainage systems." @default.
