- W173828339 abstract "N DECEMBER 1981, the University of Pennsylvania Library acquired a 1 curious little signed volume from the library of John Boyle, 5th Earl of Orrery and 5th Earl of Cork, whom we remember today as a friend of Pope, the biographer of Swift, and a highly energetic literary pack rat, the bulk of whose gatherings can still be seen in the Orrery Papers at Harvard. For his own published works, Orrery liked to bind up special copies, most often in elaborate morocco, interleaved or with extra endpapers onto which he could enter details about composition, revision, and publication. In its modest calf-bound way, the little book at Penn belongs to the same category, but with some crucial differences. Entitled Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Jonathan Swift, D.D., Dean of Si. Patrick's, Dublin, and published in Dublin despite its misleading London imprint, it belongs to Orrery's canon only by pirating his Remarks on the Life and Writings of Dr. Jonathan Swift, then running through successive editions in both London and Dublin. As a piracy the book is an odd (and oddly modem affair, with little resemblance to the sort of unauthorized reprint we would expect from the Dublin book trade." @default.
