- W1738657257 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the evidence, mainly from animal studies, relating dopamine to both the reward and the attention functions. A model for the function of the striatum, where most of the dopamine in the forebrain is found, is developed. This model, initially conceived to account for reward phenomena, is modified so that it can also account for some of the phenomena of selective attention in both man and animals. In particular, when the model is extended to include interactions between the striatum and the cortex, it is possible to account for some of the pathologies of attention found in both low- and high-dopamine states. In this model, dopamine serves a role in strengthening corticostriatal synapses under various specified conditions. According to the exact behavioral circumstance, this may involve strengthening of inputs irrespective of the output, of outputs irrespective of the driving input, or of specific input-output connections, or it may involve completely nonspecific activation of behavior. The first three of these roles of dopamine have earlier been attributed to the reward function in behavioral studies. The chapter discusses the indirect and direct evidence relating to the conjecture that dopaminergic mechanisms are overactive in acute psychotic states." @default.
