- W173870802 abstract "The ‘|Gui’ and ‘||Gana’ San (Bushmen) living in the central Kalahari desert in Botswana are hunter-gatherers, who use many of the natural resources in their environment for food. Insects are one of them. The purpose of this study was to clarify that the role of edible insects in their diet by analyzing the usage; how they were chosen, collected, cooked and eaten.Eighteen kinds of insects were recognized as edible. Among them several species of caterpillar, termite, grasshopper and buprestid beetle were potentially an important dietary resource under good weather conditions, because they were able to be collected in large quantities easily. In practice, as the emergence of the insects was limited to rainy seasons and annually fluctuated, insects did not play an important role in the diet so much. However, some species of insects were collected and eaten even when only a small quantity of them was found. The San mentioned that these insects were tasty, and used as delicacies and spices to add flavor to other foods. These facts show that edible insects are utilized because of their qualities for food. They make good use of edible insects, increasing the variety and repertory of their diet. As a result, it is concluded that edible insects in general provide these peoples' diets with more ‘spice’ than ‘substance’." @default.
