The technique may result in perforation of the ureter and subsequent stricture formation in some cases. In this study a ureteral perforation rate of 17 per cent was noted after 142 ureteroscopic procedures, with stricture formation occurring in 5 per cent. The type of dilation, reason for the procedure or placement of a postoperative stent did not seem to affect the formation of stricture but the location of the injury appeared to be significant. Of those injuries not requiring immediate surgical repair perforations within the pelvis (6 of 11) led to strictures more often than those beyond the pelvis (1 of 9). Treatment of the strictures with either an open repair or percutaneous antegrade dilation was successful. © 1987 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByClayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R, Clayman R and Clayman R (2018) UROLITHIASIS, ENDOUROLOGY AND LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERYJournal of Urology, VOL. 164, NO. 5, (1859-1864), Online publication date: 1-Nov-2000.Singal R, Razvi H and Denstedt J (2018) SECONDARY URETEROSCOPY: RESULTS AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGY AT A REFERRAL CENTERJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 1, (52-55), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1998.Harmon W, Sershon P, Blute M, Patterson D and Segura J (2018) Ureteroscopy: Current Practice and Long-Term ComplicationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 1, (28-32), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1997.Leveillee R, Zabbo A and Barrette D (2018) Stryker Frame Adaptation of the HM3 Lithotriptor for Treatment of Distal Ureteral CalculiJournal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 2, (391-393), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1994.Evans C and Stoller M (2018) The Fate of the Iatrogenic Retroperitoneal StoneJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 3, (827-829), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1993.Dretler S and Young R (2018) Stone Granuloma: A Cause of Ureteral StrictureJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 6, (1800-1802), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1993.Aronson W, Barbaric Z, Fain J and Fuchs G (2018) Fluoroscopically Guided Incision of Ureteral Strictures in Pigs with the Cautery-Wire Balloon Catheter: A Phase 1 StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 5 Part 1, (1178-1181), Online publication date: 1-May-1993.Meretyk I, Meretyk S and Clayman R (2018) Endopyelotomy: Comparison of Ureteroscopic Retrograde and Antegrade Percutaneous TechniquesJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 3 Part 1, (775-782), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1992.Stoller M, Wolf J, Hofmann R and Marc B (2018) Ureteroscopy without Routine Balloon Dilation: An Outcome AssessmentJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 5, (1238-1242), Online publication date: 1-May-1992.Morse R and Resnick M (2018) Ureteral Calculi: Natural History and Treatment in an Era of Advanced TechnologyJournal of Urology, VOL. 145, NO. 2, (263-265), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1991.Assimos D, Boyce W, Harrison L, McCullough D, Kroovand R and Sweat K (2018) The Role of Open Stone Surgery Since Extracorporeal Shock Wave LithotripsyJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 2 Part 1, (263-267), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1989.Ono Y, Ohshima S, Kinukawa T, Matsuura O, Hirabayashi S and Yamada S (2018) Long-Term Results of Transurethral Lithotripsy with the Rigid Ureteroscope: Injury of Intramural UreterJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 4, (958-960), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1989.Kramolowsky E, Tucker R and Nelson C (2018) Management of Benign Ureteral Strictures: Open Surgical Repair or Endoscopic Dilation?Journal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 2, (285-286), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1989.
